FFA convention

Once a year, FFA members from across the nation gather in Indianapolis for the National FFA Convention; one of the largest student conventions in the country. It’s a time for members to meet others who share the same passion for agriculture, leadership and personal growth.

Students from all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, come together to celebrate their accomplishments and strengthen their skills for the future.

For many members, including Salem FFA junior Delana Nolan, the convention and her FFA experiences have had a lasting impact.

“FFA has helped me in school by pushing me to get ahead on my work,” Nolan said. “When I miss a day for a contest, I’m prepared and not falling behind.”

The national convention is more than an event; it’s a chance for students to step outside their comfort zones and grow.

“FFA has helped me build my public speaking in front of large groups,” Nolan said.

Salem FFA Advisor Seth Purlee shared that this year’s convention was an incredible experience for both students and advisors alike.

“FFA National Convention is always a great experience and opportunity for our members,” Mr. Purlee said.

“They have a chance to meet FFA members from all over the U.S., talk to businesses about future career opportunities, speak with colleges about what it takes to get into their schools and much more. This year’s group of students were a pleasure to be around, and seeing their excitement and awe of the National FFA Convention is something that never gets old.”

This year’s trip was especially meaningful for Salem FFA, as former member Katie Larrimore received her American FFA Degree, the highest degree an FFA member can earn. Fewer than 1% of FFA members nationwide receive this prestigious honor.

“It is always great seeing Salem FFA members meeting and experiencing FFA at a national level,” Purlee said.

“This year was extra special as a past member Katie Larrimore was able to receive her American FFA Degree. Seeing Katie walk across the stage and realize that all her hard work and dedication to agriculture and FFA had paid off was an incredible moment.”

Purlee hopes that Larrimore’s achievement inspires current members to keep working toward their goals.

Nolan emphasized that FFA has helped her prepare for her own future.

“FFA has prepared me for my future by teaching me communication skills and improving my leadership abilities,” she said.

“I would absolutely tell new people to join FFA. There is so much more to FFA than just farming.”

Purlee added that the experience of attending the National FFA Convention is something few high school students get to experience.

“It is a great experience and something that few high school students have the opportunity to experience,” he said.

“I think it is a very valuable experience for each member, and I’m thankful that our school and faculty support this event and allow me to take multiple students on two different days to experience it.”

Over the years, Purlee has seen incredible growth in his students through their involvement in FFA.

“The growth that I see members make in FFA is unlike any other experience," he said.

“Members come in as freshmen, often nervous and shy, and by the time they leave, they’re giving speeches, winning contests, and participating in events they never thought they would. It’s amazing to see.

“My goal is for our members to continue to grow, increase their passion for agriculture, and make a positive impact on the school and in our community,” he said.

Purlee expressed his gratitude to the community for supporting Salem FFA and emphasized the importance of that continued support.

“FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education," he said. “With the support of our community, we’re able to give students opportunities that can change their lives forever. FFA is growing the next generation of leaders who will change the world.”

Through events like the National FFA Convention, students such as Delana Nolan are reminded that FFA is not just about agriculture, it’s about opportunity, growth, and the people who make the journey meaningful.
