People need assistance. Some people need assistance because they have no opportunities to come up in the world. It may be hard to swallow, but it is true.
According to the USDA, around 8% of the residents of Indiana are recipients of programs like SNAP. SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is a program in which U.S. citizens who qualify for assistance receive funds to keep from going hungry.
As of this month, some people who receive money from assistance programs will not receive assistance. Students on a school break, like Thanksgiving break, could be going home to not eat for three days.
Unlike the middle and elementary school students who qualify for Dare to Care assistance, the high school students do not get any kind of help with this program. At SHS, students do not take home food on weekends. Older students should not be neglected in this tough time, so some of the clubs and organizations at SHS have decided to do two food drives to help their peers.
The first drive will be up until Nov. 19 and the second drive will be until Dec. 15. Some items that would be appreciated are small food items, like gummies, easily prepared foods, like Ramen Noodles or PB&J, and essentials, like water.
People also need hygiene items and cold weather items. Some people cannot afford gloves or hats, so those donations would also be appreciated.
